Artist's Statement
The photographs from Life Stills are a personal expression of my lifelong fascination with family, nostalgia and representational art. Each photograph depicts an item from my mother’s childhood, stored away in my grandmother’s attic, forgotten until now, and then represented in a pop art fashion.

My photographs have emerged from an attempt to depict and give permanence to objects and people of importance to me. Each photograph shows common everyday items such as soda cans, toys, and buttons, which my mother interacted with in her youth. My grandmother found it important to store these items indefinitely and I find it crucial to continue their preservation.

All of the items in the series employ aspects of mass culture such as advertising, political propaganda and commonplace cultural objects. Pop Art was given impetus during the 1960s in America, and the term Pop Art was officially introduced in December 1962, one year before my mother was born. I found it appropriate to show these mundane items as heroic pieces, represented in an art form that appreciated and celebrated commonplace.

I visit my grandmother often and retrieve various items from her attic and photograph them in my studio. I create the pop art visuals by implementing bright colors and repetition. The decision to repeat a single image and the color combinations are not premeditated but instead decided upon intuitively. The project is an ongoing celebration of the items and the art movement from the mother’s childhood.
